With over two decades of experience in eye health, Dr. Lakana Kumar Thavaratnam is a leading neuro-ophthalmologist in Kuala Lumpur, known for his expertise in complex eye-brain conditions and holistic patient care. He currently practices at Sunway Medical Centre Velocity, where he offers specialised services in both general ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology.

Dr. Lakana earned his MBBS from Manipal College (Mangalore) in 1999, followed by a Master’s in Ophthalmology from the University of Malaya (UM). Driven by a passion for understanding intricate eye and brain connections, he pursued subspecialty training in neuro-ophthalmology at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the prestigious Singapore National Eye Centre. He further honed his skills in paediatric neuro-ophthalmology at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London.

Dr. Lakana is a proud member of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and the Malaysia Society of Ophthalmology (MSO). His contributions to the field include organising and delivering impactful lectures in Primary Eye Care and receiving multiple accolades for patient care excellence, including a Certificate of Excellence from the Department of Ophthalmology in 2013.

He is NSR-certified and highly experienced in performing both core ophthalmic and specialised neuro-ophthalmic procedures.
